What is ETIAS and how does it work

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) represents one of the biggest changes in European Union entry rules in recent years. Expected to come into effect in 2025, the system will introduce a new layer of control for travelers from countries that currently don't need a visa to enter the Schengen Area, including Brazil.

This electronic travel authorization will function similarly to the American ESTA. Travelers will need to complete an online form before their trip, providing personal information and travel details. The expected cost is 7 euros, and once approved, the authorization will be valid for three years or until the expiration of the passport used in the application.

Among ETIAS's main objectives is strengthening European border security. The system will conduct pre-screening of travelers, cross-referencing data with various information databases to identify potential security risks, irregular immigration, or epidemic threats.

For Brazilians, as well as other travelers from visa-exempt countries, ETIAS will represent an additional step in planning trips to Europe. The application process must be completed at least 96 hours before the intended travel. Most applications should receive automatic approval within minutes, but some cases may require additional analysis.

The implementation of ETIAS will affect 30 European countries, including all members of the Schengen Area. It's worth noting that some European countries popular among tourists, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, are not part of the system as they are not members of the Schengen Agreement.

For the tourism industry, the new system represents a significant logistical challenge. Airlines, travel agencies, and tour operators will need to adapt their processes to ensure all passengers have obtained the necessary authorization before boarding.

Tourism experts recommend that travelers familiarize themselves with the new system before its implementation. The lack of ETIAS authorization may result in denied boarding or entry into European territory, even for citizens of countries that maintain visa-waiver agreements with the European Union.

This report reflects the current state of ETIAS planning, but it's important to note that some operational details may still be adjusted until its effective implementation.
